Pizza Power!

I sometimes wish that I was born a turtle and changed by radioactive material into a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Mostly because I think all they eat is pizza.

Yes, you counted right. Seven different hot sauces. Now, I am not really a spicy foods kind of gal... I admit that they probably have a nice flavor, but my taste buds die from the heat too quickly to taste it. However, A. is a very different creature, and he often waxes poetic on the merits of various hot sauces. Luckily for me, he's taking this particular stash to work with him (mostly because he doesn't have any more room on his hot sauce shelf in the fridge).

Green goodness

One of my favorite vegetables is the spindly green bean. I don't know what makes it so good, but in my opinion, it's certainly a welcome addition to the table.

Butter Tart Bars

I made these last week (another foodstuff passed on to co-workers... to help shrink the waistline;) ) Not too difficult of a recipe, and pretty delicious, I think...

A. kept saying he thought they tasted like lemon, although I guess that was just a mental thing because they're called "tarts" ;) They're mostly just butter and sugar.

Not quite as clear as Bill Wadman's shot, but I thought it was still pretty cool. This marks the first celestial event that I've actually followed through on and photographed, instead of lazing around on the couch :)

One of the V-Day treats we had yesterday was the glorious Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé from Roy's. It just may be the best dessert ever. I took a pic with my point & shoot but haven't gotten a chance to upload it yet... but I can't stop thinking about the soufflés! So I did a quick search on Flickr and found this lovely shot:

Those of you who know me know that a) it's Valentine's day! (I guess you don't have to know me to know that one...) b) it's my birthday!! b) I got engaged one year ago today!!!

So it's a pretty special day for me. I apologize to all Valentine haters, but I obviously had to post a chocolate raspberry heart-shaped dessert in honor of the occasion.

Got to have the blowtorch

Probably the most well-loved kitchen blowtorch application, the crème brûlée is one of my favorite desserts. Must be something about that crack when the spoon first breaks the sugar... magnificent.

The mixture of creamy filling and crunchy burnt sugar just makes everything in the world seem all right, if only for a moment. Perhaps it's time to invest in a blowtorch? (I think the fire extinguisher should come first though...)

Brown bottoms

I found this recipe yesterday and decided it would be my project for the night. Turned out pretty well (but evil for the waistline).

They were moist and very chocolatey. According to A., they were the best dessert I've ever made, so that's pretty good. Of course, I haven't really made all that many for him over the years, so I'm not sure how high that bar is actually set.

We only ate two of them and brought the rest to work to pawn them off on coworkers. They think we're doing them a favor! Suckers ;)

My dream of cake...

Lately I've been obsessing over cakes (if you couldn't tell from my mini-cake making episode). Although my cupcakes were pretty good right after baking, the moistness seemed to go downhill (good thing the icing was so tasty). So I've embarked on a mission to make a moister, less crumby cake.

According to Alton Brown's coconut cake episode, this would take at least a day to make (especially if you start from actual coconuts). So it will probably remain a dream. But in the meantime, I have Shirley Corriher's tips to try, so wish me luck...

Red Velvet Cupcakes... take 2

I didn't use the fancy schmancy (cheapy plastic-y) piping tip this time for the icing, but the cupcakes themselves turned out much better... more like actual cupcakes this time ;) Here is the recipe I used, although I only made 12 so I cut it down by 1/3. I also doubled the cocoa ratio in the recipe so it came out very chocolatey.

Yep... the batter is still red! Not quite as bright as last time because of the higher cocoa content.

I used aluminum cupcake wrappers this time. I still sprayed 'em with Baker's Joy because I hate when they stick.

Piped the cream cheese frosting with a zip top bag. I think it came out OK, although my piping skills leave something to be desired...

Kind of looks like, um, this guy's leavings. Incredibly cute, but... yea. All the same, it still tastes great ;)

First bite revealed a tender, chocolatey, delicious cupcake! Yay!

I'm counting this as my first success. Hopefully more to come.

For anyone who wants the recipe in weight instead of volume, here it is converted (again, the original was here):

Cupcakes (changed from 36 to 12 cupcakes and increased cocoa ratio to almost double)
350 degree oven

1 1/4 cups (125 grams) cake flour
2 1/2 tablespoons (22.5 grams) cocoa (not dutch processed)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder or 1/6 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoons vinegar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 ounce red food coloring paste (I used 1 tablespoon of the grocery store liquid)
3/4 cups (150 grams) sugar
1/4 cups (55 grams) butter
1 egg

-preheat oven to 350°F
-sift flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder (or cream of tartar), and salt into medium bowl
-whisk buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla, and food coloring in small bowl to blend
-beat sugar and butter in large bowl until well fluffy, 3 minutes
-add egg, beating until well blended, about 30 seconds
-beat in dry ingredients in 4 additions alternately with buttermilk mixture in 3 additions (dry, wet, dry, wet, dry, wet, dry)
-scoop into cupcake tins bake cupcakes until tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 20 minutes
-cool in pans 10 minutes
-cool completely on racks

Apparently I totally missed Mardi Gras. According to my calendar, today is the first day of Lent, and I've already screwed it up by having chocolate for breakfast.

Also, whose idea was it to have Valentine's Day during Lent this year?! Crazy talk.

Anyway, since Catholics are technically supposed to be eating only bread and water for a while, here is some tasty-looking bread for anyone following the Lenten fast.

Here is some incontrovertible proof that yes, it is possible to be a vegan and still eat delicious looking food. These are "Apple-Pumpkin Spice Oat Pancakes", aka deliciousness in griddle format. I think the pomegranate seeds make the photo.

Real American Hero

After the Superbowl last night (yea, Giants! yea Superbowl party food!), it's going to be tough to get back to the daily grind this week. So I just wanted to keep it simple today with the big, fat American sandwich known as the hamburger.
